It’s not every day that you get asked to write an app review. I wanted to take advantage of this opportunity to look at an old friend Evernote who’s been hanging around on my iPhone and laptop for years. While I knew Evernote was a great organizational tool the additional features applicable to my public relations workflow are even more impressive. Information needs to be fast and easily accessible in PR. Careful research was required when looking for a robust app that facilitated my need to keep multiple balls in the air and Evernote continues to be the right choice.
Can We Talk About Function?
The premium version of Evernote allows you to:
connect and sync unlimited devices
benefit from offline access
have 1GB of uploads per month
enjoy larger individual note sizes
create task lists
turn your notes into presentations
annotate PDF's
search inside attachments
Inspiration On the Go
Not only is Evernote a terrific writing and research tool but its ability to help store and save content for future use is impressive. A user can easily save audio notes, web articles, links and much more. Personally, because I’m required to conduct a large amount of research for writing assignments this is my favorite feature. Saving or recording important content quickly and on the go is a breeze.
Easy Content Capture
Text, images and documents can be created within the app and are easily imported into a "note". Instead of being limited to a static text-based note, pictures can easily be stored along with text, pdf's, tasks and calendar reminders. Add to that access to meeting notes and to-do lists and a public relations professional is well equipped to manage projects of all sizes. The Web Clipper is an extension used in Chrome (my browser of choice) that can capture anything within the online browser from an entire page to small excerpts. Additionally, any audio source can be captured and saved within a note. Creation of notebooks keeps information well organized in addition to a tagging function that enables deeper searches. You can also annotate what you save by adding text or highlighting which is helpful.
Presentations
All notes can be modified into a slide format to be used for presentation purposes. Presentation content can be derived from all assets contained within notes including audio, video, links, emails, tasks, PDFs and pictures. This said, my preference is to compose important projects on my laptop, however, if you’re rushed or receive last minute requests you could deliver using Evernote.
Sharing is Key
Evernote provides you with a private email address to forward work done within the app. This allows sharing any project, presentation or task with myself or others. Content is easily shared across multiple platforms. Evernote provides the flexibility and mobility that I need whether you’re in the office or on location.
Academics

With regard to academics, the scan feature allows students to input handouts and syllabi. Pictures from white boards can be saved as well. Lectures and discussions can be saved through audio capture for easy review at a future point in time. Email management allows for students to forward emails from the professor or fellow students into a single notebook. Being a current student, I love this feature.
Personal Finance Tool
It’s a given that public relations work involves expense and travel. Evernote’s personal finance tool makes keeping track of expenses easy. You can take a shot of any receipt from my smartphone using Evernote and then create a “receipts” folder. Because Evernote can make text within pictures searchable, you can easily search your purchase history. Expense reports become easier.
Easy Interface
Moleskine notebooks and journals are now Evernote camera-enabled. Dotted lines are readable by Evernote to facilitate an easy transfer thereby archiving all of your analog note taking which is truly remarkable.
Conclusion: It Works!
Evernote remains a tried and true workhorse. When it comes to reliability, organizational ability and information sharing - it’s hard to beat. Not only is Evernote efficient it's simple to learn and use.
My Wish App
When it comes to what I wish for in an app, everything revolves around ease of use. Personally, I find it difficult to type quickly on my mobile devices so any task that can be voice activated intrigues me. Something similar to Siri for Evernote would be interesting. The ability to instantly dictate blogs, transcribe interviews, send files, store clippings and edit copy by voice command would be really helpful. I’m aware that this function exists in certain apps but to put them all together in one perfect public relations tool would be ideal.
